Cloud computing - we hear the term almost daily. But really, just
what is cloud computing all about? That seems to be a common question.
In June of this year, TELUS and IDC Canada released a study on cloud
computing which surveyed 200 Canadian business and IT executives and
directors at large Canadian companies (500+ employees) across a range of
industry sectors. The study found that 63% of Canadian companies
surveyed did not have enough or had only a base level of knowledge to
make decisions on whether to use a cloud service or their internal IT
department.<br />
A recent article from eweek.com also indicates that
there is a great deal of confusion about cloud computing. The article
makes reference to a recent study commissioned by Citrix Systems which
included more than 1000 adults in the U.S. The study showed that most
respondents thought that the cloud is related to weather. 51% of
respondents thought that the weather could interfere with cloud
computing. Despite the confusion, the study also found that 97% of
participants are using cloud services today with examples including
on-line banking, shopping, social networks and file sharing. Further,
59% of respondents indicated that they believe that the "workplace of
the future" will be in the cloud which is somewhat contradictory to the
prevalence of cloud computing today.<br />
This insight above mirrors
what we find amongst our own clients. Knowledge of cloud computing is
relatively limited and as a result, organizations may be missing out on
significant opportunities to make their business stronger by reducing
cost and risk. Our hope is that this article provides insight into cloud
computing to help you to assess its fit for your business requirements.<br />
What is cloud computing?<br />
First
of all, it's useful to understand where the term cloud computing came
from. It most likely originated from the use of a cloud image to
represent a networked computing environment or the internet.<br />
A
quick Google search will reveal a number of definitions for cloud
computing. I like a definition I picked up from Wikipedia which defines
cloud computing as the delivery of computing as a service whereby shared
resources, software and information are provided to computers and other
devices as a utility, similar to the electricity grid, over a network
which is most often the internet.<br />
What are the various cloud computing models?<br />
To
sort out some of the confusion around cloud computing, it is helpful to
understand the various cloud service models, of which there are three -
software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and
infrastructure as a service (IaaS).<br />
SaaS is the most widely known
flavour of cloud service. SaaS is sometimes referred to as on demand
software. With SaaS, software and its associated data are centrally
hosted and are typically accessed over the internet using a browser.
What are some examples of SaaS? MailChimp, the application we use to
distribute our newsletters, is an example. Google Apps is another
example as is Dropbox, and the list continues to expand.<img alt="" class="" id="yui_3_5_1_1_1533603685527_682" src="https://tse4.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.iTSK1V7xG9L0YaXPl2KJUAHaF6&pid=15.1&P=0&w=226&h=181" style="height: 181px; margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px; width: 226px;" /><br />
PaaS
provides the delivery of a computing platform and required solutions to
facilitate the deployment of applications without having to invest in
the cost and complexity of hardware and software. Some examples of PaaS
include Microsoft Azure and Google's App Engine.<br />
The IaaS service
model allows clients to avoid the procurement of servers, software, data
centre space and network equipment. Such resources are provided as a
fully outsourced service. Examples of IaaS include Amazon's Elastic
Compute Cloud and Rackspace.<br />
In addition to the various cloud
service models, it's useful to understand the delivery models through
which cloud computing is distributed. The main delivery models include
public, private, community and hybrid.<br />
A public cloud offers
infrastructure and solutions to the general public and is typically
owned by a large organization that sells cloud services.<br />
A private
cloud is designed solely for one organization. A private cloud may be
managed by the organization which uses it, or by a third party, and the
infrastructure may be located on the site of the cloud user or
elsewhere.<br />

<div id="article-content">
Almost two thirds (66%) of businesses are considering using the cloud to backup data, according to new industry research.<br />
A
survey, conducted by the research firm TechValidate, also revealed that
62% of firms are looking to introduce a new approach to their backup
and disaster recovery within the next 12-18 months.<br />
The majority
of respondents (59%) claimed there was a need to modernise backup
facilities due to increasing data volumes, with 54% saying they also
needed to speed up recovery times in the event of a disaster.<br />
A quarter of the respondents did, however, claim that they were still concerned with security in the cloud.<br />
Neil
MacDonald, vice president at Gartner Research, recently claimed the
analyst firm also found that security in the cloud was a primary concern
when firms were considered cloud adoption.<br />
However, in a blog on
the company website he defended security in the cloud, saying: "In
multiple Gartner surveys, security is cited as the number one inhibitor
to the adoption of cloud-based computing. Many IT professionals have a
preconceived notion that cloud computing will be less secure than what
they can deliver themselves on premises. This is a mistake. "An absolute
statement that cloud computing will be less secure is as wrong as an
absolute statement that cloud computing will be more secure. Both can
and will be true."<br />
Cloud backup is quickly becoming a very
appealing data protection option for many IT organisations. As data
growth continues unabated and companies need to protect data in remote
office, laptop and virtualised environments, traditional backup/restore
is commonly incapable of completing backup jobs within the scheduled
time. Recoveries on the other hand are usually a multi-layered exercise
in frustration.<img alt="" class="" id="yui_3_5_1_1_1533603685527_671" src="https://tse4.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.uq-gojOdg7p-l8N0_vdfAwHaHY&pid=15.1&P=0&w=300&h=300" style="height: 168.2px; margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px; width: 168.2px;" /><br />
Asigra's cloud backup solution
is an end-to-end solution that is purpose-built to leverage virtualised
environments, has built-in mobility support with scale, meets security
standards and aligns the value of data with the costs of protecting it.<br />
Asigra
started developing cloud backup technology in 1986 by creating a
platform that could deliver backup and recovery services over the
telephone lines. Today - over 20 years later, with telephone lines being
replaced by the internet - it remains the most efficient and secure
cloud backup solution of its kind.<br />
Over 550,000 sites are currently protected using Asigra technology in both private and public cloud environments.<br />
You
do not have to choose whether to exclusively manage the corporate
backups by maintaining your own infrastructure or completely outsource
them by leveraging SaaS. You can adopt a Hybrid Cloud Data Protection
Strategy as Asigra Cloud Backup allows alternating and seamless
migration between the two without reinstalling the Data Collector Client
software at each protected site. Also, you can easily migrate your
backup data from your internal data center to an MSP's facility or
vice-versa using the Asigra migration tool. As your backup strategy
evolves, whether you elect to retain the custody of your data or
outsource custody to a trusted MSP, Asigra ensures that you always
maintain control over your backup data - like money in the bank.<br />

<div id="article-content">
<img alt="" class="" id="yui_3_5_1_1_1533603685527_649" src="https://tse2.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP._JGA9_v5qKYEyZXZf2NhvwHaEj&pid=15.1&P=0&w=273&h=169" style="height: 169px; margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px; width: 273px;" />Hybrid Cloud Storage<br />
For hybrid cloud storage, data mostly
resides within the private portion of the cloud. If apps are also
deployed within the private cloud, the data store may store files and
data for these apps, this should be the highest-performing storage
system within your entire hybrid cloud storage strategy.<br />
It's all about time and money<br />
The
costs of local and cloud data persistence is now so inexpensive that
using secondary means, even tertiary mean, of storing data as an active
backup system for primary persistence, or even as an up-to-date copy of
the primary storage, is the best approach. With a few exceptions.<br />
In
the hybrid cloud storage strategy, the secondary storage system exists
in the public cloud. Data is replicated or moved to a public cloud
storage system, my preference is as Amazon Web Services' (AWS) Simple
Storage Service, to provide active backup for the primary storage
system. In other cases, an enterprise might move older data to the
public cloud to free up space in primary storage. AWS Glacier would be a
great example.<br />
If a secondary storage system is used to store
data moved from primary storage, be sure to design your apps to look for
data in both storage systems.<br />
Triple up<br />
Archived storage is
optional, but triple redundancy is always a good idea. Again, and
especially, with the low cost of storage. So why not? Archived storage
systems are low-cost and low-performance systems designed for long-term
storage of data that is no longer needed by core business processes, or
to back up other backup systems. AWS Glacier, for example, is built for
archival storage functions. In my industry, track/trace/serialization of
Pharmaceutical products, it is mandated to archive data for six years.<br />
Hybrid Cloud and Tiered Storage<br />
Using
a hybrid cloud for a tiered data storage architecture offers several
benefits to an enterprise. First, because it establishes two, even
three, separate storage systems all at different price and performance
levels. Second, tiered storage helps developers and IT create
application-specific storage strategies. For example, some data
analytics systems interact almost exclusively with the most current
data. As a result, an organization could move older data into a cheaper
systems.<br />
Additionally, tiered storage in the cloud creates a
backup environment that spans two separate platforms -- public and
private cloud -- to provide automatic redundancy that is geographically
separate. Finally, tiered storage in hybrid cloud should reduce the risk
of data loss, caused by disk failure or human error, to almost zero.<br />
The
challenge, however, is to create a tiered storage strategy that
accounts for all enterprise use cases and properly serves business
processes. For instance, in data analytics, the system might need to
support other use cases, such as fraud detection through machine
learning.<br />
Enterprises must carefully design and plan for both
their tiered storage architecture and automation processes. As with
anything, test, test, test to ensure your hybrid tiered storage system
lives meets requirements and expectations.<br />
As always - Stay Cloudy<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Ever struggle with sending a document, picture, or even an audio or video file over the Internet?</b>
It's a common struggle amongst engineers, architects, medical
practitioners, graphic designers, administrative assistants and a
multitude of business owners.<br />
<b>Why email doesn't work:</b><br />
Most
files are too large to send via email and the process of compressing
them can mean the recipient is unable to open the file or it is
corrupted in the compression process. Even compression isn't enough for
many files.<br />
Another common complaint with email is that it simply
isn't secure. Emails can be intercepted, accidentally sent to the
wrong person, or land in a junk mail box and missed all together.
Imagine all of your hard work ending up in someone's junk mail box and
eventually deleted.<br />
<b>Why digital delivery doesn't work:</b><br />
Digital
delivery, or the process of uploading your document or file to a third
party who then makes it available to your recipient or recipients (don't
confuse it with FTP).<br />
One of the problems with digital delivery
is that the file is only accessed for a limited time, meaning the
recipient has to be available to download the file immediately. Not only
that, they have to have space on their computer to store it.<br />
If
you're sending numerous large files this can be a real problem. Digital
delivery can also lack the high level of security required by many
individuals and business owners.<br />
Sending confidential and
proprietary information, or even patients' medical files, is too
important to leave in the hands of a digital courier.<br />
<b>Online file storage:</b><br />
A comprehensive, yet simple, solution for all file sharing needs.<br />
One
of the most powerful solutions is to utilize online file sharing and
storage via FTP, File Transfer Protocol. This program, the most
commonly used internet file sharing solution in the world, is a very
simple and straight forward solution to use, which means it is an ideal
solution for the person with a high degree of technical knowledge or the
computer novice.<br />

<div id="article-content">
<b><img alt="" class="" id="yui_3_5_1_1_1533601994876_1320" src="https://tse2.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.s0yoigl_F6ncUcEFsh3f9wHaHF&pid=15.1&P=0&w=160&h=154" style="height: 154px; margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 1px; width: 160px;" />Business owners large and small share the same struggle -
transferring large files to customers securely, quickly, and
professionally.</b><br />
There are a variety of solutions out there,
however many of them fall short of users' needs and goals. Some
solutions are extremely time consuming, others are insecure, and the
majority of them still fail to handle large file sizes.<br />
<b>Common file sharing solutions that fall short:</b><br />
<b><i>Email:</i></b>
Emailing files presents a number of limitations. The files are easily
lost, deleted, or forgotten in a junk mail box. The security measures
available with basic email, either the businesses email or the
recipient's email, are extremely limited or non-existent, which means
anyone with enough motivation can access private files. Email just
doesn't accommodate large files. Even short audio or video files are
most often too large to email and graphic files have the same problems.
Documents, unless they're compressed and free of graphics, are too
large as well.<br />
<b><i>Digital file transfer:</i></b> There are a
few services that provide digital file transfer. This typically
involves registering for their service, uploading your file and sending
an email. The service then sends an email to your intended recipient
containing a link to your uploaded file. They then have a limited
amount of time to access and download the files. One of the problems
with digital file transfer is that time limit. What happens if they
want to access the file after the time limit? They can't. It's gone
and you have to go through the entire process again. Additionally,
security is still an issue and digital file transfer doesn't leave any
room for collaboration unless your client or business partner wants to
get an account with the file transfer service too. There are just too
many limitations.<br />
<b>FTP Site hosting, the way to go!</b><br />
FTP
stands for File Transfer Protocol. In a nutshell it is the widely
accepted system for transferring files via the Internet. What FTP site
hosting means to business owners is the ability to upload files onto the
Internet and share them with specified users. More specifically, each
file that is uploaded onto an FTP site can be stored in an online, user
specified folder. Only people with a valid password and user ID who have
been assigned to the specific folder can access its files. A business
can have any number of folders and hundreds of assigned users, each user
only has access to their own specific folder.<br />
FTP site hosting has no time restraints businesses and customers can access their files any time they need to and from anywhere.<br />
FTP
has absolutely no restrictions on file size. Unlike email and even
digital file transfer, FTP file size limits are set by you. You choose
the size site you need, from 600 MB to 100 GB and as you grow you can
increase the capacity with the click of a button.<br />
FTP site hosting
is customizable. You can often add a logo and change the colors to
help brand your FTP site and make your customers and associates feel
like they're in a familiar place.<br />
FTP site hosting is easy. The
ability to set up your FTP site, create your folder, add users, and
upload/download files can all be done is as little as five minutes.
Five minutes and your entire system is good to go. You're ready to
share files with customers and associates around the world.<br />
FTP
site hosting saves time and provides the simplest and most secure
solution to the file sharing problems faced by most businesses. There
really is no downside. It's extremely cost effective, most starting at
only a few dollars a week, and you can find great FTP site hosting
services that allow you to have an account on a month to month basis
which means no long term commitments.<br />

<div id="article-content">
<img id="img" src="https://tse4.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.Sta6Dfaa2WKYt1YyPLWE9wHaGw&pid=15.1&P=0&w=200&h=183" style="height: 428px; width: 470px;" />Internet is the fastest medium to share or transfer large files from one computer to another.<br />
FTP
has several advantages over HTTP and considered as a reliable
communication protocol to share/transfer large files via the Internet.
Through FTP service you can transfer large files irrespective of the
content (text, image, audio, video, multimedia, etc). Further, you can
restrict cyber predators from accessing the files, which are stored in
the server. Since files are transferred through individual FTP account,
therefore only the authorized FTP account holder of a particular FTP
site can transfer files in the server by providing the right user name
and password.<br />
Secured FTP provides some added security features
like - encryption of digital information. Secured FTP hosting services
allow you to encrypt the files with a 'key' before uploading them in the
server. Authorized people can download and decrypt the file by using
the 'key' in a right way. To enjoy this communication protocol you have
to register for the setup of FTP hosting service in your business
network.<br />
<b>How to organize FTP setup?</b><br />
You have to
create a new FTP site for your business network. This is the first step
to build a complete setup of FTP hosting service. From the Site Manager
section you have to create a new FTP site for your business network.
During this process you have to provide following details:
<br />
<ul>
<li>Label for FTP site (e.g., My companyname FTP Space)</li>
<li>FTP Host Address (e.g. members.companyname.com)</li>
<li>User Name</li>
<li>Password</li>
</ul>
During this process you have to define Login Type of the
users. The FTP hosting service provider will provide the options of
'Login Type'. You have to select an option to get connected with your
registered FTP site. The system will then allow you to share/transfer
large files via the server.<br />
<b>How to manage FTP hosting service?</b><br />
FTP
hosting services are managed by FTP client software. FTP software
provides necessary supports for transferring files over the Internet.
For example, consider the facility of drag - and -drop or quick
navigation from one folder to another just like Windows operating
system. Following are some general features of FTP software:
<br />
<ul>
<li>Ensure file transfer from one server to another over the Internet</li>
<li>Store and configure connection between the server and the user </li>
<li>Provide 'Content Manager' to look after the functions</li>
<li>Support execution of several files within a given time</li>
<li>Monitor the flow of digital data through the FTP site</li>
<li>Provide user friendly smart interface</li>
</ul>
It is easy to manage FTP hosting service. FTP hosting
service comes with all the site management tools, which are programmed
by FTP software.<br />
<ul>
<li>File Transfer System - to transfer the files efficiently through the network </li>
<li>Site and File Management System - to manage folders in the server and transmission of files</li>
<li>Access Right Management - to ensure the privacy of the data</li>
<li>Smart Interface - to make the site user friendly for registered FTP account holders </li>
</ul>
As an FTP service holder there is no need to pay extra
effort to manage the file transmission system. If you have little
knowledge about the functionality of FTP hosting service you can
efficiently maintain your own FTP site without paying extra penny for
the maintenance.<br />
<b>How to maintain FTP service?</b><br />
Like
FTP setup it is easy to maintain FTP service to get faster and secured
transmission of digital data from one computer to another over the
Internet. Features, which come with FTP hosting service, include user
friendly maintenance facility. Following are some example to describe

set default user settings, which include default host and user level
options and the system will automatically apply the new settings. There
are several operations, which are considered as general maintenance of
FTP hosting service. You can block files when uploading or downloading
them in or from the server. Also you can rename or delete folders and
create directory. The authorization of FTP server maintenance depends
upon the priority of the user. Some FTP hosting service comes with the

Security can be worrisome when you hire a third party host for
business file sharing services. It's hard to imagine placing company
secrets into a concept. As far as individuals are concerned, that's
essentially what Cloud is all about because it's not something tangible
as placing a document inside a safety vault. But it's one thing to not
understand the concept; it's another thing to reject the idea based on
false assumptions. The fact is cloud has been used extensively by
businesses which saw their productivity jump several times over.<br />
<b>Getting the Word Out</b><br />
What
is FTP business hosting? The FTP refers to the file transfer protocol
and it simply means transferring documents, files, images to and from
your account, or to your employees. The term "transfer" is a bit of a
misnomer because in reality, you are discussing, managing, modifying and
using files with individuals within your trusted network to perform a
particular task to improve your business.<br />
If you are still
confused, the concept is much like sending emails or using courier
services, but only much more efficient because you can initiate large
file transfers without any hitch.<br />
<b>What to Look for in File Sharing Site</b><br />
Fast connectivity - you need several ways in order to access your files and also quick download and upload features.<br />
Unlimited
number of users - with large businesses, it's a common practice to
delegate. The CEO of a large corporation can't do it alone, so he has
managers, supervisors and executives to serve as an extension of his
self. Those managers, supervisors and executives also delegate certain
responsibilities to their trusted underlings.<br />
Simplicity - the
problem with running a business operation, particularly large ones, is
to get everybody else involved. But there's a certain resistance to
learning something new especially if it's complicated. That's why in FTP
hosting, secure file sharing should also be very simple.<br />
<b>More on Security</b><br />
You
can't talk about large file sharing online without talking about
security. The third party host should offer you multilayer of
protection, including very strong firewalls to keep out unwanted
visitors. And because the host will serve as your server, the data
centre should be amply protected with the most advanced vendor security
updates. Nobody can access your files except those people you give out
your password to. They are all required to login for easy tracking. Far
from the idea that your secrets are stored somewhere online, the
information is actually housed in physical servers protected 24/7 by
security officers, biometric security and CCTVs.<br />
